The construction of the Sanitary Landfill of the South Rhodes has been completed with success and now it is in trial function. the Sanitary Landfill of the South Rhodes will accept the non-hazardous solid waste of the municipalities of South Rhodes, Lindos, Kamiros, Archangelos, Attavirou and Halkis Island. Its capacity will be 338.600 m3 and lifetime at least 12 years. The rehabilitation of the existing dumpsite has been done, as part of this project.
The Sanitary Landfill of the South Rhodes is the final solution for the disposal of municipal waste, which is an environmental upgrade of the island. In the landfill, a state-of-the-art biological treatment has been put into operation which contributes to the reduction of the ecological footprint of the landfill through the re-use of the water-repellent water to be irrigated. Next step according to Municipal Plan the creation of a Waste Treatment Plant together with the opening of the new Material Recovery Facility of Rhodes in order to operate the new Landfill as a residual one.
