The United Association of Solid Waste Management in Crete (ESDAK) along with the Municipality of Heraklion plan to develop and operate the first Environmental and Circular Economy Park in EU. The park will be developed in a public area of 27 ha which is located in Nea Alikarnassos, west of the city of Heraklion, south of the airport and north of the Heraklion Industrial Area.
The whole project is estimated to cost around 45.000.000€ and will be co-financed under the PA 2014-2020.
The park will consist of diverse environmental facilities and businesses providers of waste management from its inception and recycling to its final disposal. In addition, the park will be in use for research, innovation, environmental education and recreation purposes. It will be open to the public as it aims to attract many visitors, residents and tourists.
The Municipal Council of Heraklion approved the proposal for the creation of the Environmental and Circular Economy Park (Master Plan) presented by ESDAK.
The Master Plan, which provides the conceptual layout to guide the development of the park, was prepared by EPTA Environmental Engineers-Consultants.
The project is expected to be implemented in the next five years. It is estimated that:
- 250 new jobs will be created
- the park will attract over 10.000 visitors per year
- over 35.000 tons of waste will be recycled under the park's operation
