The sanitary landfill of the Municipality of Andros was licensed by the Decentralized Administration of the Aegean (Department of Environment and Spatial Planning, No 36396, 21/09/2018). The license was issued after many years of effort of the Municipality of Andros to solve the environmental problems caused by the absence of systems for treating municipal waste. At September 18th, 2018 the environmental license was validated by the Minister of Environment and Energy Giorgos Stathakis.
EPTA SA (www.epta.gr) conducted the Environmental Impact Assessment Study of the project and provided technical support to the municipality of Andros during the licensing procedure. The project was approved by all the other government authorities and others involved in the EIA process.
The project includes the following:
• Sanitary Landfill Site for the disposal of non-hazardous solid waste residuals.
• Pretreatment facility which aims to enhance recycling and recovery of resources and to reduce the environmental pollution potential of waste residuals disposed to landfill.
• Composting facility for the separately collected organic and green waste.
• Improvement of the access road to the sanitary landfill site.
The Technical Studies and the tender documents of the project will be completed in 2018 and the project will be ready for financing by EU funding programmes.
