Preveza Municipality located in the Epirus prefecture, has developed a Sustainable Energy & Climate Action Plan (SECAP) within the framework of the Covenant of Mayors Initiative. EPTA S.A. in collaboration with Roikos S.A. technically supported the Municipality to compile the SECAP and to pinpoint the appropriate measures to reduce CO2 emissions by 40% until the year 2030.
According to the Baseline Emission Inventory (BEI), in 2014, 104 thousand tonnes of CO2 were emitted within the region of Preveza from municipal activities, agricultural, industrial, residential and tertiary sectors and private transportation. Approximately 47% of the emissions came from private road transportation, 27% from the residential sector, 10% from the tertiary sector, 5% from the agricultural sector, 5% from the industrial sector and 6% from municipal buildings, vehicles and road lighting.
The SECAP proposes measures and activities to be implemented in various sectors that include:
1. Municipal buildings
2. Buildings of the residential and tertiary sectors
3. Road lighting
4. Renewable Energy Resources
5. Municipal vehicles
6. Private vehicles and urban mobility
7. Primary and industrial sector
The Municipality has already started to implement measures for improving its energy efficiency, such as the installation of photovoltaics on the rooftop of school buildings with installed capacity of 10kW. Additionally, the Municipality shall carry out an extended improvement of the cycling and walking infrastructure, proceed to implement bioclimatic redesign of its urban space, while an upgrade of the Municipality’s public lighting will take place in due time.
The implementation of the actions proposed in the SECAP will help the Preveza Municipality to reduce its carbon footprint and at the same time act as a role model for the citizens (residential and tertiary sectors) as well as the agricultural and industrial sectors. These sectors, in turn, will start investing in similar energy efficiency solutions and the installation of Renewable Energy Systems.
