The pilot scale implementation of biowaste separate collection continues in the Municipalities of Athens (Gazi, Kypriadou) and Kifissia (N. Erythraia, Kefalari, Kastri, K. Kifisia, N. Kifisia). Brown bins have been distributed in the aforementioned areas, where the participating citizens and restaurants can separate the produced biowaste at source.
According to the results presented during the International Conference Athens2014 on sustainable waste management, which was held in Athens during 12-13 June, more than 400 tn have been collected and composted in the mechanical biological treatment plant of Athens, while the produced compost meets certain European quality standards.
The project is being implemented in the framework of the LIFE+ Program of the European Union with the cooperation of the two Municipalities, the National Technical University of Athens, the Waste Management Authority of Athens (ESDNA) and the company EPTA SA (Environmental Engineers – Consultants).
Main deliverables of the project are the “Guide on the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of biowaste source separation schemes” and the “Biowaste management software tool”. Both deliverables are addressed to Municipalities interested in setting up and operating separate collection systems.
