The steps involved in setting up, monitoring and evaluating a bio-waste source separation scheme are described in the Guide published by the Waste Management Authority of Athens (ESDNA), the National Technical University of Athens and the company EPTA SA (Environmental Engineers – Consultants) with the cooperation of the Municipalities of Athens and Kifissia which participated in the LIFE+ Program Athens Biowaste.
The publication provides guidance on all aspects of a bio-waste source separation scheme including communication. The Guide was created based on the experience gained during the implementation of the bio-waste pilot collection scheme in the Municipalities of Athens and Kifissia.
The bio-waste collected is treated and composted in the mechanical biological treatment plant of Athens, while the produced compost meets certain European quality standards.
