The Municipality of Agia in Larissa Prefecture has successfully fulfilled the commitments deriving from its participation to the Covenant of Mayors Initiative by submitting a Sustainable Action Plan to the CoM Office in January 2013. EPTA has technically supported the Municipality to compile the Basic Emissions Inventory (BEI) “selecting 2011 as the base year“ and to choose the appropriate measures in order to reduce CO2 emissions by 20,1% the period 2011-2020.
According to the BEI, in 2011, 58.675 tonnes of CO2 were emitted within Agia from municipal activities, residential and tertiary sectors and private transportation. Approximately 25% of the emissions came from municipal buildings, vehicles and road lighting, 37% from the residential sector, 22% from the tertiary sector and 19% from private road transportation.
SEAP provisioned measures and activities in different axes:
- Municipal buildings
- Buildings of residential and tertiary sectors
- Road lighting
- Municipal vehicles
- Private vehicles
- Sustainable and Energy Efficient Public Procurement
In this framework, the Municipality has already started implementing measures for improving its energy efficiency by actively participating to funding opportunities provided by the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) 2007-2013. Concluding, it is expected that total emissions from municipal buildings will be decreased by approximately 60%, from road lighting by 44%, from buildings in residential and tertiary sectors by 12%, from private vehicles by 10%. In addition, by analyzing the data, it seems that the Municipality of Agia could achieve the ambitious target of becoming a zero carbon community, provided that private RES Â projects (wind and photovoltaic) licensed within the Municipality of Agia are constructed and in full operation by 2020.
