The City of Egaleo has successfully submitted to the Committee of the Covenant of Mayors the Sustainable Energy Action Plan describing the measures for succeeding the targets of 20-20-20 by 2020. EPTA has collaborated with Centre for Renewable Energy Source (CRES) for developing the Baseline Emission Inventory. For the year 2005, the total CO2 emissions were estimated at approximately 500.800 tons of CO2. These emissions are a result of the energy consumption in the public sector (buildings, public lighting, transport), the private households, the tertiary and the transportation sector. The target set by the City is the reduction of approx. 110.156 tons of CO2 by 2020. In the Action Plan, the City is committed to reduce the energy consumption of public buildings by 38% and of public lighting by 45,6%. The measures that have been selected including the thermal insulation of buildings, the upgrading of the central heating systems, the energy efficient procurement of goods and services, the promotion of ecomobility etc. Special emphasis is also given to raising environmental awareness among the citizens.
