The wastewater treatment plant of the Municipality of Marathon was licensed by the Ministry of environment and energy (Environmental permitting Department, No 6517, 10/02/2017). The license was issued after a 20 year effort of the Municipality of Marathon to solve the environmental problems caused by the absence of systems for collecting and treating urban waste water.
EPTA SA (www.epta.gr) during the last 3 years conducted the Environmental Impact Assessment Study of the project and provided technical support to the municipality of Marathon during the licensing procedure.
The new WWTP will be capable to receive and treat the wastewater of 110,000 p.e. The WWTP is a tertiary treatment facility with effluent levels regulated by The Ministry of environment and energy for discharge to surface water (sea) and reuse (irrigation). Its objective is to protect the environment from the adverse effects of urban waste water discharges.
The Technical Studies and the tender documents of the collecting system and the WWTP will be completed in 2017. The call of tender for the construction works is expected to be published in 2018. The project will be financed by the Regional Operational Program (ROP) Attica 2014-2020.
Nea Makri and Marathon agglomerations have also to comply with the Council Directive 91/271/EEC. Because of its delay in implementing the directive on urban waste water treatment for 6 agglomeration (Nea Makri is one of them), Greece was ordered by the Court of Justice of the European Union (Judgment in Case C-167/14) to pay a fixed sum of €10 million and a periodic fine of €3.64 million per semester of delay. With the construction of the works Greece will partially fulfil its obligations under European Union law and minimize fines that was ordered to pay.
