On the 1st of December 2016, the landfill of Naxos became operational. The construction of the Sanitary Landfill of Naxos, in an area of approximately 170 acres at "Corfi Xidi", started in May 2014 and has now been successfully completed. After a sceduled trial operation, the municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades, will be responsible for the operation of the landfill. The Sanitary Landfill will accept municipal waste not only from the island of Naxos but also from the islands of Iraklia, Donoussa, Schinoussa and Koufonissia. The Sanitary Landfill has a capacity of 548.875m3, which is expected to meet the local waste disposal needs for at least 23 years.
Apart from the earthworks and the basic infrastructure works (entrance, buildings, roads, fencing etc.), the construction of the Sanitary Landfill, incorporated important systems and facilities for the protection of the environment, such as:
1. a lining system,
2. leachate treatment facilities,
3. a drainage system,
4. biogas treatment facilities,
5. environmental control facilities,
6. planting and irrigation facilities.
With the operation of the Landfill, the dumpsites of the Islands will no longer be used and their environmental restoration will be completed. The Landfill was successfully constructed following the most modern standards of the joint venture of ΜΤ Α.Τ.Ε and YRIA Technique S.A. EPTA Environmental Consultants – Engineers www.epta.gr prepared the Detailed Design of the Landfill.
